Keyboard shortcuts

On macOS, Cmd takes the place of Ctrl on Windows and Linux in most shortcuts — the exceptions are in the tables below. The F1–F10 keys work without modifiers — on a Mac with media keys, press them together with fn.

The tables show the default shortcuts. You can change the shortcuts of most menu commands, the F1–F10 bar and the bar above the panels in the Keyboard Shortcuts window — see Changing shortcuts. The keys of the file list, the preview, the editor and the dialogs are fixed. In the app, F1 shows the current shortcuts, including the ones you have changed (help in the app).

Some actions have no default shortcut, e.g. Search…, Compress…, Burn to Disc…, Convert Video…, New Connection…, Show Hidden Files, System Information… and the buttons in the bar above the panels (home folder, Downloads, Desktop, root folder). You can give them one in the Keyboard Shortcuts window.

Panel — selection

On an item that is already selected, Cmd+click / Ctrl+click and Shift+click change the selection only when you release the mouse button. This way, a drag started with the key held down takes the whole selection.

Drag and drop

Without keys, dragging to the other panel copies, and dragging within a panel (onto a subfolder or /..) moves. While you drag, the info bar under the panel says what will happen when you drop. On macOS, Cmd has no effect while dragging. Files dropped into a panel from another app are copied; on Windows and Linux, Shift moves them. When you drag to Finder, File Explorer or another app, that app decides whether to copy or move — details in File operations.

Clicking a column header sorts the list, and an item dragged onto a category moves into it (onto “..” — back to the main list).

On this list, F3, F4, Shift+F4, F7 and F8 are the shortcuts of view, edit, new text file, new folder and delete. If you change them, the new keys work here too.

Preview (F3)

In the text preview and the hex view, the arrow keys move through the content, and with Shift they select. More: Find bar, going to a line, Markdown.

Dialogs

Changing shortcuts

File → Keyboard Shortcuts… opens a window with a list of actions and their shortcuts. The actions are in the groups Command bar F1–F10, Panels and top bar, File, Functions, FTP/SFTP and Help. The list also has actions with no default shortcut (e.g. Search…, Compress…, Convert Video…, the buttons in the bar above the panels, and on Windows and Linux Settings…) — you can give them one.

1. Select an action in the list.

2. Click the Shortcut field (or press Enter in the list, or double-click the action).

3. Press the new key combination. The shortcut is assigned right away if the window accepts it (rules). Esc or Enter returns to the list.

4. OK saves the changes. Cancel (or Esc in the list) discards them.

Below the field, the Default: … line shows the default shortcut of the selected action. Changed shortcuts are bold in the list, and an action without a shortcut shows none. Buttons:

• Remove Shortcut — the action is left without a shortcut. Its menu item and its button in the bar (if it has them) still work with the mouse.

• Default — restores the default shortcut of the selected action.

• Restore All Defaults — all actions go back to their default shortcuts.

A combination used by another action moves to the selected one, and the other action is left without a shortcut. The window says so below the field and names the action that lost its shortcut.

After OK, the new shortcuts work right away, without restarting: on the keyboard, next to the menu items, on the F1–F10 bar buttons, in the tooltip of the Disconnect button and in the F1 help. A bar button shows the new shortcut before its name (e.g. “F11 Help”), and without a shortcut — just the name. While the shortcuts window is open, the app's shortcuts don't work — menu shortcuts included.

Tip: A shortcut you don't want to press by accident — e.g. F10, which closes the window — can be removed with Remove Shortcut. Exit stays in the File menu.

macOS: If you have several windows open, the new shortcuts work right away in the window from which you opened the shortcuts window, and in every new window. Windows opened earlier pick them up the next time the app starts.

The app saves the changed shortcuts in the settings file — only the ones that differ from the defaults (the [shortcuts] section).

Combinations the app won't accept

The simplest choice is a function key (including F11, F12 and beyond) — the window accepts it on its own and with modifiers (except Alt+F4 on Windows and Linux) — or a letter or digit with Cmd / Ctrl. Some combinations would break typing or working with the list, so the window doesn't accept them and says why below the field:

Tab works on its own (it is the default shortcut for switching panels) and with Ctrl (on macOS with Control or Option). The keys of the file list, the preview (F3), the editor (F4) and the dialogs are not in the shortcuts window and don't change.
